We have designed this Triplex Ceramic Ball Bearing Billet Turbo to fill the need for the Volvo R community. The Volvo R is a stout all around performer and we wanted to push the limits.
We have spent many months on application of this turbo. The Bosch ME7 in the Volvo has its limitations, but after working with our tuning partner, JZW Tuning, we have been able to create more power, but more importantly, a larger power band.
We chose a 55mm inducer/58mm exducer to have more air flow than the ME7 can utilize without sacrificing turbo acceleration.
There is no lag. You touch the throttle and you are in boost.
We utilize a Turbosmart wastegate actuator to help stabilize boost. We do recommend the use of an electronic boost controller to eliminate overboost codes. Electronic boost controllers creep up to maximum boost and manual boost controllers pass the maximum boost setting and creep down.
We have found that with a reliable tune the stock piston rings handle 375whp to 400whp on cars with over 90k miles. The ring limit seems to be associated with increasing boost over 22lbs. You will experience excessive blow-by by running too much boost on a stock engine.
We did not use the factory BOV as it was not suitable for this turbo. We tested this turbo without the use of a BOV. If you want to install one, we suggest the TS-0203-1022 from Turbosmart. It gets installed using a 1 inch nipple welded to the intake pipe upstream from the MAF and a 1 inch nipple welded to the charge pipe in between the throttle body and intercooler. This BOV recirculates the air so as not to disturb the MAF reading, but also releases up to 50% of the air to atmosphere for the sound effect.
This is the fastest accelerating and efficient turbo available for your R.
Minor modification to the lower mount below the compressor cover is required to make room for our larger compressor cover. 1¨ wide and 1/8¨ deep of the aluminum needs to be removed.
To utilize the factory cast charge pipe, the bracket corner on the front and back of the pipe need to be rounded to be able to rotate them about 30 degrees.
The oil feed line (filter) kit is complete and is bolt-in. Cars with higher miles tend to have more contamination and we require the use of the inline filter. Contamination can easily clog the oil access for ball bearing turbos.
We have tested the turbo on a 6 speed manual R with 650 cc injectors (required for tune) an aftermarket downpipe, Snabb intake hose and upgraded intercooler.
